United’s full-year 2025-26 financials were announced on Wednesday, detailing a club wage bill of £302million. That was an £11.3m (four per cent) fall on a year prior and the club’s lowest since the 2019-20 season that was impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. With revenue up and wages down, improved operating performance followed, and, naturally, a lowering of United’s wages-to-revenue metric. That has long been healthy at Old Trafford, but last season’s fall to 44.6 per cent represented an 18-year low; not since 2008-09 have United’s wages eaten up a smaller proportion of club income.

United’s operating loss, before any player sales, was £16m last season, making it the second year running that particular deficit has halved, having landed at £59m two years ago — and that was in a Champions League year, too.

Overall revenue hit a club record £677.6m, even as falls were experienced in both matchday income (down £6.4m) and, more noticeably, commercial takings (£16.1m). The latter fell in large part due to United not replacing Tezos as training kit sponsor (Betway have since stepped into the breach), though a lack of Champions League football also saw £10m shaved off the club’s kit deal with Adidas.

Despite the latter, retail and merchandising income actually increased in the year by £11.9m (eight per cent), with United benefitting from a full year of their in-house e-commerce model (it only operated for 10 months out of 12 in 2024-25), as well as them booking a one-off credit related to the terms of that model.

A return to Europe will see each of those revenue streams rebound in 2026-27, and United are projecting yet more record income this season, with a sizeable uptick to £740m-760m forecast. The Athletic estimates prize money just from qualifying for the Champions League will generate the club an extra £45m, and a further £1.8m has already been earned via the opening game week victory over Azerbaijani champions, Sabah.

Milan’s hiring Amorim, just five months following his Old Trafford departure, just about halved the amounts payable to him by United, saving the club £8.5m. And that meant overall 'exceptional' costs reduced by over £28m from 2024-25.

United’s free cash flow — cash generated after covering operating costs, capital spending, like that on transfers, and interest payments — remained £58m in the red, but was much improved from the £202m deficit of just a year earlier.

In fact, were it not for some sizeable late-season spending, the club’s free cash flow would have been positive for the first time in four years. United spent £63.5m in June on acquiring 25 acres of land north west of Old Trafford, a plot intended to house a new 100,000-seater home

Overall profitability remains elusive, and the reason will come as little surprise. Net financing costs, driven by the club’s sizeable debt, totalled £69.6m last season, wiping out the EBIT surplus and generating a bottom line loss of £43m, a £9.9m worsening on a year earlier. It is the seventh year running United have lost money; nearly £450m has now been lost since 2019.

In June, United refinanced their largest tranche of long-term debt — or, as many fans refer to it, the ‘Glazer debt’ — which first appeared on club books following the family’s leveraged takeover in 2005.

With $425m (£320m) in senior secured notes due to mature in June 2027, United restructured and increased that portion of debt, taking out a $550m (£415m) loan at a higher annual interest rate of 5.36 per cent (the coupon on the $425m had been 3.79 per cent). That will increase annual interest costs on that particular tranche by around $13.3m (£10m, at current rates).

At the end of June 2026, United’s financial debt totalled £689m, a £52m increase on a year prior.

United joined Chelsea as the only club, so far, to have topped £200m in annual amortisation charges, stemming from big transfer spending in Ratcliffe's first 18 months at the helm.

At the end of June, the club’s cash balance sat at £67.2m, a 13-year low and far below the £300m cash on hand the club held before the pandemic struck.

Ratcliffe's £238.5m injection upon his arrival two and a half years ago spurred over £60m in improvements to the Carrington Training Centre but no further cash is expected to flow from the current ownership group.

Pasirodė MU 3Q finansai. Finansiniai metai primenu, kaip sezono, ne kalendoriniai.

Geri dalykai:
- Nepaisant vos 40 rungtynių šį sezoną ir jokios Europos, metinės pajamos ir EBITDA planuojamos labai panašios į 2024/25 metus.
- Broadcast income (+17%). ~£191.5m prize money (top 3 in EPL). Prize money +£55m nuo praeitų metų.
- Grįžus į ČL, atsistatys pajamos iš Adidas deal'o + atrodo susitarė su Betway dėl training kit deal' už £20m per metus. Neturėjo šį sezoną jokių pajamų iš training kit deal'o.
- Wage-to-revenue ratio 42% buvo IIIQ. Geriausias nuo Covid laikų, Kažkiek pablogės, kai IVQ sukris visi bonusai už patekimą į ČL, o kitą sezoną atsistatys algos, kurios sumažėjo pas kai ką, kai nepateko klubas į ČL. Bet tuo pačiu ir nusimes klubas Kazio, Sancho kontraktus, gal pavyks atsisveikint ir su Rashu. Hojlundo išvykimas irgi turės pozityvią įtaką finansams, bet ne visi £38m, kuriuos klubas gaus iš Napoli.
- Operating profit improved to £11.3m (+£27.3m YoY). Pre-interest profit: £37.7m (first in 6 years).
- Kitą sezoną vien iš ČL papildomai gali įkrist apie £70m + padidės match-day income dalis.

Minusai:
- £22m cost of sacking Ruben Amorim.
- £55.7m interest expense (heavy debt burden)
- High amortisation (~£200m/year, near record level)
- Free cash flow approx –£160m (negative)

Realiai daug uždirba, bet ir dafiga sudegina MU kas metus. Daug skolingi už transferus, neuždirba tiek, kad iš uždirbamų pinigų padengtų įsipareigojimus, turi skolintis, didina palūkanų sąnaudas + dar senos Glazerių skolos su palūkanom velkasi. Šitą dalį klubas, jei ir sutvarkys, tai tik per ilgą laiką. Reikia nuolatinio pateikimo į ČL, nebedaryt tokių klaidų, kaip su Amorimu, kontroliuot labai transferus ir karts nuo karto kažką brangiai parduoti. O kur dar naujo grandiozinio stadiono planai..

Man tai iš visos šitos situacijos keletas minčių ir išvadų kyla:
- Toks jausmas, kad nebuvo iki galo gerai susipažinta su Ashworthu ir jo stiprybėm. Akivaizdu, kad tai turbūt nėra stiprus sporto direktorius komandos buildinimo ir trenerio parinkimo klausimu, bet turbūt būtų geras COO.
- Keista, kaip toks patyręs vadovas, kaip Ratcliffe, neįvertino rizikos, kad šitiek naujų executive samdant, gali būti trinties, dėl asmenybinių, patirties skirtimų ir noro nsavo vietą po saule išsikovoti. Logiška atrodo būtų buvę samdyt Barrada ir tada jau jam leist žmones pagal save susirinkt.
- Atleidi belekiek darbuotojų klube, pakeli bilietų kainas, atšauki Kalėdinį balių dėl dievo meilės, bet vienas tavo sprendimas prasitęst Ten Hagą kainavo virš 10 mln., antras tavo sprendimas samdyt Ashworthą kainavo dar 2.5-3mln. svarų. Ouch.

Dan Ashworth has left his role as Manchester United sporting director after just five months.

Ashworth officially joined United on July 1 after a lengthy period of gardening leave at former club Newcastle United, but the transition has not been smooth and his exit has been decided upon.

Ashworth’s departure was agreed in a meeting with chief executive Omar Berrada at Old Trafford after United’s Premier League game with Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been pivotal to the call to part ways, in a move that will stun staff at United given Ashworth’s prominence in trying to reshape the club.

Multiple sources, speaking anonymously like others in this story to protect relationships, say United instigated the separation. The club say the final agreement to end Ashworth’s contract was mutual.

Is the United job impossible?

No, but it’s difficult, especially for managers following one of the best managers ever. The expectations are very high but we can’t live in the same era as when I played. We had Arsenal and Chelsea as rivals towards the end. Now, most teams have money or even if they don’t, they don’t need to sell.

Back then, Wayne and Cristiano were the best young players and we signed them. Now, United can’t just go and buy Evan Ferguson. We couldn’t buy the players I mentioned to the club.

Players like?

Erling Haaland, before he made his Salzburg debut. Declan Rice, who wouldn’t have cost what he did in the summer. We discussed Moises Caicedo, but we felt we needed players ready for there and then. Brighton are very good at letting players come from abroad and find their feet for a year and a half. At United, you don’t have that luxury and that has cost the club loads of players.

We wanted Jude Bellingham badly — he’s a Man United player, but I respect he chose Dortmund. That was probably sensible. But it’s why I respect Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Dan James and Jadon. Young players prepared to come into a team that wasn’t 100 per cent there like it was when I arrived.

I would have signed Kane every day of the week and my understanding was that he wanted to come. But the club didn’t have the budget with the financial constraints from Covid-19, there was no bottomless pit.

Did you want to sign Sancho and how do you think he’s done?
Yes, I wanted to sign him. Manchester United will never sign a player the manager doesn’t want. That’s not the case everywhere. Jadon was put up as the No 1 target for the right wing by the scouts and when you look at his talent, I could see why.

Unfortunately, it has not worked out. When he arrived, he had to go to hospital and that was a setback as he couldn’t start the first games. He’s immensely talented and we haven’t seen the best of him. I hope we do, but he prefers to play left wing… where Marcus plays.

Did you feel the players threw you under the bus, as some of your former team-mates have stated?

No. Not really. Some weren’t as good as their own perception of themselves. I won’t name names, but I was very disappointed when a couple turned down the chance to be captain. I was also disappointed when others said they wouldn’t play or train because they wanted to force their way out.

Ralf Rangnick came in after you were sacked and was critical of the club he found. Was that a slight against you?

The club he found in November 2021 was different from September 2021. I told him when I gave my opinion on every player. Things had soured, the collective had been lost and that’s not Man United, where teams are built on the collective.

Some players felt they should’ve played more and weren’t constructive to the environment. That’s a huge sin for me. When I didn’t start games I wanted to prove to the manager he’d made the wrong decision.

Now, a lot of players aren’t like that. Agents and family members get into their heads and tell them they’re better than they are because they have a vested interest. It’s a disease of modern football.

In my last season, we played Liverpool at home. I felt the players were ready for it, just like I’d felt they were ready when we’d gone to City and won. We could have sat back and countered but my decision was to go for it. We lost 5-0. It was 50/50, more or less, in possession and chances at half-time, yet we were 4-0 down.

I made the wrong decision and that was my lowest point as United manager by a mile. Roberto Firmino was probably the opposition player who caused me the most problems as a manager. The 6-1 defeat at home to Spurs was different and affected by a sending-off.

There’s a perception among fans and some media that Ronaldo ruined your team, that he was a vanity buy by Ed Woodward. What’s the truth about his arrival and how you found him to work with?

It was a decision that was very difficult to turn down and I felt we had to take it, but it turned out wrong. It felt so right when he signed and the fans felt that at that Newcastle game, when Old Trafford was rocking (after Ronaldo scored twice in a 4-1 win). He was still one of the best goalscorers in the world, he was looking strong.
