Over five-and-a-half years after he last kicked a ball for Everton, Tony Hibbert is coming out of retirement but he won't be returning to Goodison Park to provide cover for Seamus Coleman.

Instead the 40-year-old has signed for French amateur club ES Louzy.

Hibbert, a home-grown hero for the Blues who made 328 appearances for them in a one-club professional career between 2001-2016, is reported as having been given his veterans licence to turn out for the tiny town which is in between Nantes and Poitiers.

A keen angler for many years, Hibbert bought a 33-acre carp fishery in France after hanging up his boots but while he enjoys the solitude and peacefulness of being by the waterside with his rod, it seems that the lure of the dressing room buzz has proven too strong.

La Nouvelle Republique quotes Louzy’s president Jerome Archambeau as saying: “He was looking for a small club to keep himself fit and was was already taking care of our Under 13s side.

“He was itching a bit to return and coming back to the basics of football after such a career is good for him.

“The idea is that he brings us his experience, and that he takes pleasure from what he’s doing.

“We’re a family club, and I think that’s what he liked, namely the spirit of camaraderie rather than that of competition.”
