Colemanas bus kapitonu. Bainesas vice, Gylfi trečias, o Digne ketvirtas. Turbūt visi spės panešiot raištį

Įkeliu straipsnį ne dėl to, kad čia būtų kažkas labai naujo ir informatyvaus, bet kad parodyčiau, kokį vandenėlį pilsto visų taip mylimi The Athletic.

The dreamer, the old hand and the middle man: how Everton’s powerbrokers work together

By Patrick Boyland and Greg O'Keeffe 1h ago 1

Sometimes, Marcel Brands’ phone rings in middle of the night. And as Everton’s director of football rolls over in bed to answer, he will already know who is calling: his boss.

Fahad Moshiri is determined to make Everton great again. And when he thinks he’s worked out how, Everton’s owner will pick up his phone to Brands or the head coach Marco Silva, enthusiastic to share his latest idea.

“Moshiri could call the coach or Marcel at 2am and say: ‘I’ve been thinking… do you think we could get so and so…?’,” a source tells The Athletic.

“He might read something about Gareth Bale being unsettled and ask what would it take to get him?

“He’s a reactive guy and instinctive. You don’t become as successful as he has in business and not trust your instincts, but this is his first foray into making big calls in football and football is very different to any other business.”

Silva knows that more than anyone right now. Tonight he leads Everton across Stanley Park on into what could be the definitive game of his reign.

For “definitive”, see also nadir.

Speculation continues to swirl around the Portuguese’s future as Sunday’s galling last-gasp defeat at Leicester darkened an already sombre mood around the club.

Silva remains a lightning rod for supporter frustration in a season that is threatening to implode due to a combination of bad results, poor performances, costly injuries and transfer recriminations.

A defeat at Anfield and a victory for Southampton at home to Norwich would see Everton slip into the relegation zone. It could mean the clamour for the 42-year-old to be relieved of his duties reaches fever pitch — if it hasn’t already in some quarters.

Win or draw, and the increasingly stoic coach may have earned the right to take his side into further big games against Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City — and Leicester and Liverpool in the cups — over the next four weeks.

The decision of whether to stick or twist comes from three different and powerful characters in the club’s boardroom.

Moshiri, the chairman Bill Kenwright and Brands have all been trying to find a solution to the growing crisis enveloping the club.

They held a boardroom meeting, also attended by chief executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale, after the abject defeat by then bottom-club Norwich on November 23.

Conversations have continued ever since between London-based pair Kenwright and Moshiri and Brands, who lives in the north-west.

But how do the trio interact on a daily basis?

Iranian Moshiri became Everton’s majority shareholder in 2016 with the purchase of a 49.9 per cent stake in the club and in June he cemented his ownership by increasing his shareholding to 77 per cent.

The former Arsenal investor was hailed by Kenwright as “the perfect partner to take the club forward” at the announcement of his arrival three years ago.

Kenwright, a theatre magnate and successful businessman, has been on Everton’s board of directors since 1989. He became the majority shareholder in 1994 and chairman in 2004.

He led a long search to find someone with the billionaire status to propel the club board, culminating with his selection of Moshiri. He now owns just 5 per cent of the club, but remains a prominent figure at boardroom level.

Brands, the former sporting director at PSV Eindhoven, was recruited to succeed Steve Walsh in a key position at Goodison in June 2018. Such was the impression he made, the Dutchman was made a board member in January.

The Athletic asked a series of figures who deal with the club at the highest level how they operate, and what it could mean for Silva.

Dutchman Brands has become the “middle man” according to an agent who deals regularly with the club.

“He’s the referee on some issues,” he says. “He’ll be trying to make sure that whatever happens next manager-wise ties into the long-term vision he has helped shape for the club, of competing for trophies, being financially sustainable and signing young players with a re-sale value that can work like it has at Atletico Madrid.

“It seems fragmented at the moment with the manager search. The chairman will offer his advice, Moshiri will speak with influential agents and then you’ve got Brands, who has wanted to give Silva more time.”

While Moshiri largely splits his time between Monaco and London, Alexander (Sasha) Ryazantsev was appointed to the Everton board in 2016 to help bring Moshiri’s vision to fruition. The Russian met then-CEO Moshiri while working as an investment analyst at Global Natural Energy PLC. Ryazantsev is believed to play an everyday role in the running of the club.

Having taken something of a side seat after the appointment of the deeply unpopular Sam Allardyce in 2018 and a bout of ill health, Kenwright is firmly involved once more in the decision-making.

“Bill takes a lot of calls and has a lot of contacts,” says one agent. “He’s a great deal-maker and just knows so many people in the game through his time as Everton’s owner.

“But ultimately the next manager will be Moshiri’s call. And of course the problem you have if you choose a manager recommended by an influential agent friend is that he then wants to put his players into the club in the next transfer windows. So you pay a lot of money for them and have other players already on big, long contracts, not in the team and the whole thing gets even more expensive and unwieldy.”

Perhaps fortunately given the pressure of a Premier League club in crisis, Brands is described as “logical” and “pretty unflappable”.

“He’s usually cool under pressure,” says one source. “That’s not to say he can’t snap sometimes but it’s very rare.

“It is undoubtedly a bit more complicated when you have a boardroom with big personalities. It’s not unique to Everton by any means.”

A figure close to one of Everton’s top first-team players described Brands as a “straightforward personality.” When it comes to transfers, he is usually the sole Everton negotiator, even if Kenwright has also been known to contribute on occasion.

Brands made a swift and positive impression two months into his time at the club by engineering the signing of the left-back Lucas Digne from Barcelona on a five-year deal for £18 million.

Digne was the club’s player of the season last term and the transfer was described as “difficult to pull off” by one source. In the end, it was Brands who broke the impasse.

Initially reluctant to sell the former Roma and Paris Saint-Germain defender, it was Brands who persuaded the Catalan club to do a deal.

The Athletic understands he was also “convincing in selling Everton” to the player in his assured and confident manner that impresses footballers and executives at other clubs alike.

He has solid relationships with agents but keeps them all on an even keel, according to another source.

“He initially doesn’t give much away until he develops a relationship with people, but his knowledge of players is second to none,” says one agent. “He’s one of the best directors of football a lot of us have worked with.

“He has repeatedly highlighted the need to win silverware and this is one of his main priorities.”

However, not everything Brands touched in this summer’s transfer window turned to gold. The pursuit of a fourth centre-back in Kurt Zouma, who had enjoyed a successful loan spell at Goodison last season, failed late in the window.

It left Silva short of experience and options in a key area.

The word in agents’ circles is that the Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo was a player Silva really wanted until Brands vetoed the deal.

Meanwhile, a £52 million offer for Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha, rejected by the Londoners, is believed to have been led by Moshiri.

Brands, thinking long-term, is understood to have been less keen to spend such a sizeable fee on a player who struggled to make an impact the last time he moved to the north-west at Manchester United.

Meanwhile, the perception in some quarters has been that the signing of 19-year-old Moise Kean from Juventus — recruitment led by Brands albeit assisted by Silva, did not represent the bonafide goalscorer the manager really needed. In that case, the Dutchman’s close links with the agent Mino Raiola paid dividends as the club snared one of Italy’s top prospects, but Kean is yet to score in royal blue.

Asked about that in his press conference on Monday, Silva declined the opportunity to reach for mitigation.

“It will not change anything for tomorrow’s game or in four days if we talk about the summer,” he said. “It will create more things for you to talk about but won’t help Everton.

“It’s to protect the club and not create problems.”

The Athletic has been told that agents know Moshiri is the man to ring if they are struggling to get a transfer over the line. “If a deal needs a kick up the arse, Moshiri is the one to call,” one source says. Moshiri is keen to be involved in transfer dealings and regularly picks up the phone to top agents.

Lower down the club, Brands has greater space in which to make his mark. The Athletic understands he plays a lead role in negotiations for under-23 and academy players, unlike his predecessor Steve Walsh, who largely allowed David Unsworth and recruitment advisor Jamie Hoyland to dictate policy. During meetings with players and their representatives, Brands maps out contract deals and player pathways in his characteristically straightforward manner.

There have been concerns among some agents that the pathway to the first-team has become clogged — another hangover from previous regimes. With Brands targeting silverware and Silva attempting to save his job, the Everton manager has so far resisted the urge to blood the likes of Anthony Gordon, Lewis Gibson and Dennis Adeniran, all of whom train with the first-team on a regular basis. This has led to frustration in some circles.

One source told The Athletic that Brands has made changes in a number of key areas as he attempts to find a solution to the logjam. Chris Perkins has been brought in from Derby Country to head up academy recruitment and be Brands’ right-hand man.

One of Brands’ tasks has been to overhaul the wage structure at under-23 level. For a while, Everton have struggled to find permanent or loan deals for players they have wanted to move out of the club. It is understood Luke Garbutt, now on loan at Ipswich Town, was handed a sizeable deal of over £25,000 to ward off interest from other clubs when he signed a new contract in 2015. Brands’ aim is to create a sustainable structure so that the mistakes of the past are not repeated.

The creases are still being ironed out. “There are plenty of young players who signed on good terms and that’s a problem when it comes to negotiating new deals. Marcel told me the ‘money tree is no more under Moshiri,’ ” one source says.

Brands pays close attention to all age-group sides at Finch Farm and will have a considerable input over which players are awarded professional contracts and scholarship terms. His role at the academy was described as “hands-on”. “Before his arrival, it wasn’t always clear who academy staff were meant to be speaking to as the first-team manager has a lot on his plate. Now Brands is involved in everything and has been excellent in that regard.”

At PSV, all of Brands’ youth sides played in the same way, using the same formation. The Athletic has been told that progress in this department has been “slower than he (Brands) would probably have hoped,” mainly due to the different coaching styles and player profiles within the academy.

It could easily be argued that progress higher up the ladder has been just as slow. Eighteen months into Silva’s tenure, Everton sit at another crossroads. Patience is running thin as the slump towards the relegation zone continues.

So far, the trio of Moshiri, Kenwright and Brands have chosen not to change the manger. Brands has been one of those still advocating the need for patience. For now, at least, Silva clings on. The next big decision could well shape Everton’s future.

Before they start a new chapter, Everton’s top brass must first be on the same page.

Former Arsenal boss Unai Emery was approached about the Everton job, Sky Sports News understands.

Shanghai SIPG boss Vitor Pereira has ruled himself out of the running to become the next Everton manager.

Tuo tarpu Old Trafforde dar diriguos Fergusonas.
